How we used AI to see more possibilities in the clothes we already own.
We started with a simple question:
How many different outfits can we create from the clothes we already own?
Instead of opening a shopping app, we opened our AI conversation.
We gave it our actual wardrobe—from high-waisted denim and tailored tweed jackets to cropped pieces, platform sneakers, and specific footwear. Then we added something just as important: context.
We explained how we actually live, where we're going, how we commute, what we need to be comfortable doing, and even our tendency to fall back on the safety of head-to-toe black.
The result?
54 outfit combinations.
Some were familiar. Some pushed us well outside our comfort zone. A few made us wonder why we hadn't thought of them ourselves.
But the 54 outfits weren't the most interesting part.
The interesting part was learning how to communicate with AI well enough to get useful results.
Your Closet Is More Than a List of Clothes
When you look at your wardrobe, you don't see isolated garments.
You see a favorite jacket. The jeans you can actually wear all day. The shoes you can walk in. The blouse that needs another layer. The colors you love—and the ones you never reach for.
AI only knows what you tell it—and what it can reasonably infer from what you tell it.
If you simply give it a list of clothes and ask it to "create outfits," you're asking it to make assumptions.
That's why context matters.
Start With What You Actually Own
Be specific.
Instead of:
"I have a blue jacket."
Try:
"I have a cropped navy tweed jacket with a structured silhouette."
You don't need to know every technical fashion term. Describe what you see and what you know.

The same applies to shoes, jackets, skirts, tops, and accessories.
The better AI understands the pieces, the more useful the possibilities become.
Tell It About Your Real Life
We weren't dressing an imaginary person.
We were dressing ourselves.
Tell AI where you're actually going and how you're getting there. A presentation, a day on campus, a commute on public transportation, or eight hours away from home can require very different clothing decisions. Weather, comfort, walking, and dress expectations all matter.
A pair of shoes can look perfect with an outfit and still be the wrong choice if you're going to spend the day walking.
A beautiful jacket can photograph wonderfully but be impractical for your commute.
A cropped top may work beautifully with high-waisted denim but require a different styling approach for another setting.
Style has to work in the life you're actually living.
Color Is More Complicated Than It Looks
Color is another place where being specific helps.
"Blue" could mean navy, cobalt, dusty blue, gray-blue, or something entirely different depending on the garment, lighting, and fabric.
We've even experimented with using a simple crayon color chart as a familiar reference when describing shades. It isn't a scientific color-calibration system, and it certainly doesn't replace seeing the actual garment. When something matters to the outcome, give AI a better description.
And when it comes to color, our own eyes still get the final vote.
The Mask Test
One of the reasons I've become comfortable experimenting with AI goes back decades.
During a professional development workshop, I participated in a communication exercise where one person wore a mask over their eyes while another person had to guide them through a space and help them complete specific tasks.
It sounds simple.
It wasn't.
The person giving instructions could see the room. The person wearing the mask couldn't. The instructor knew where the furniture was. The other person didn't.
Suddenly, all the details we normally assume are "obvious" became extremely important.
Working with AI can be surprisingly similar. AI only knows what you tell it—and what it can reasonably infer from what you tell it. You know your closet, your body, your schedule, your commute, and what makes an outfit feel like you. If you don't communicate those things, AI has to guess.
And sometimes it will guess wrong.
Break It Down. Test It. Try Again.
Some old-school problem-solving habits have helped me here.
The basic process is surprisingly similar: break the problem down, give clear instructions, test the result, figure out what went wrong, and try again.
When something doesn't work, the result often shows us what we failed to communicate. Instead of accepting the answer—or abandoning the experiment—we can explain what didn't work and try again.
Try It Yourself: The Très Chic AI Closet Method
- Inventory — Tell AI what you actually own. Include color, length, fabric, silhouette, and footwear.
- Describe — Add details that aren't obvious from a simple item name. Fitted or oversized? High-rise or low-rise? Practical for walking?
- Add Context — Explain where you're going, how you're getting there, the weather, the dress code, and how long you'll be wearing the outfit.
- Set Your Preferences — Tell it what you love, what you avoid, and what you're willing to experiment with.
- Review — Would you actually wear this? Does it work in your real life?
- Refine — Tell AI what doesn't work and why. Then ask it to try again.
Then give it this assignment:
I want to create new outfits using only clothes I already own. Here is my wardrobe: [list your pieces]. My typical day includes [commute, campus, office, errands, etc.]. My climate is [describe]. I usually wear [describe your style]. I'd like to experiment with [colors, proportions, layering, footwear]. Please create several outfit combinations using only these items and explain why each works.
That's where the real value appears. You're not waiting for one perfect answer. You're curating possibilities.
AI Can Generate the Possibilities. We Still Have to Curate Them.
That's probably the biggest lesson our 54-outfit experiment gave us.
We're not handing our personal style over to a machine.
We're using AI as another set of eyes.
It can help us spot combinations we might have overlooked, organize a large amount of information, and push us outside our usual habits.
But it doesn't know what it feels like to walk through a train station in those shoes. It doesn't know that the jacket you love photographs beautifully but annoys you after three hours. It doesn't know which outfit makes you feel completely yourself.
We do.
And that's where human judgment becomes part of the process.
