"Hi, do you remember me? We used to cross paths years ago. I just wanted to let you know that I named my daughter after you. I told her that the woman I knew with this name was strong, super nice, and beautiful. I even show her pictures of you."
The message arrived out of the blue, and it stopped me in my tracks.
Of course I remembered her. She carried an inner strength you could feel from across a room, and she was the kind of steady presence other people quietly organized themselves around. It's a rare thing when someone like that takes the deliberate time to build another person up with genuine words. We don't see it happen often enough.
Here's what unsettled me, in the best way. She wasn't a close friend. We didn't spend weekends together. Our interactions were almost entirely in passing, a shared smile, an encouraging nod, a wave across a busy room. Mostly she just saw me working, handling my responsibilities, dealing with people. Quite often I was a sweaty, hot mess walking out of a class I'd just finished teaching, hair everywhere, glowing in the least glamorous way, nothing about me photographable. I wasn't wearing high fashion. I wasn't posed, and I certainly wasn't perfect.
Yet without my realizing it, she was reading my character.
As we've explored in previous editorials, style is highly malleable. It's a visual language spoken in a multitude of ways. For some it's an avant-garde art form painted with dramatic makeup and high heels. For others it's a subculture materialized in the crisp lines of a custom hot rod. But what about the way you carry yourself when no one is actively looking? Do humility, compassion, and profound kindness express style to you?
I'd argue they do. I've met people who wear the same crew-neck tee in rotation with three identical pairs of Levi's, same color, same fit, day in and day out, who still possess an undeniable, breathtaking sense of fashion based entirely on how they move through the world. Their style is written in their actions: their respect for other people's time, their reliability, their ethics in business, the fiercely protective way they care for their employees and their families.
This is the hidden architecture of style. The armor you wear isn't made of luxury fabrics. It's woven from your work ethic, your kindness, and how you make people feel when they cross your path. Long after anyone forgets the outfit you wore to an event, they will remember the strength and grace you projected. Live in a way that leaves a lasting silhouette.
How do you express your own style through your daily actions?
